Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“As wild, unpredictable, and fascinating as the man himself。 ” —Complex
“A cautionary tale that ends in triumph。” —GQ
“A revelation and a welcome addition to hip-hop’s literary legacy。” —All Hip Hop

The highly anticipated memoir from Gucci Mane, “one of hip-hop’s most prolific and admired artists” (The New York Times)。

For the first time Gucci Mane tells his story in his own words。 It is the captivating life of an artist who forged an unlikely path to stardom and personal rebirth。 Gucci Mane began writing his memoir in a maximum-security federal prison。 Released in 2016, he emerged radically transformed。 He was sober, smiling, focused, and positive—a far cry from the Gucci Mane of years past。

Born in rural Bessemer, Alabama, Radric Delantic Davis became Gucci Mane in East Atlanta, where the rap scene is as vibrant as the dope game。 His name was made as a drug dealer first, rapper second。 His influential mixtapes and street anthems pioneered the sound of trap music。 He inspired and mentored a new generation of artists and producers: Migos, Young Thug, Nicki Minaj, Zaytoven, Mike Will Made-It, Metro Boomin。

Yet every success was followed by setback。 Too often, his erratic behavior threatened to end it all。 Incarceration, violence, rap beefs, drug addiction。 But Gucci Mane has changed, and he’s decided to tell his story。

In his extraordinary autobiography, the legend takes us to his roots in Alabama, the streets of East Atlanta, the trap house, and the studio where he found his voice as a peerless rapper。 He reflects on his inimitable career and in the process confronts his dark past—years behind bars, the murder charge, drug addiction, career highs and lows—the making of a trap god。 It is one of the greatest comeback stories in the history of music。

The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is a blunt and candid account—an instant classic。

It’s safe to say that Gucci Mane lived, ‘One Hell of a Life’。 His autobiography tells the story of his rise to fame, starting from the trap house to rapping to his stints in and out of prison。 He also shows how he overcame addiction and changed his mentality for a better lifestyle。 Being a fan of his music, I didn’t know a lot of what was going on during the recording of his more popular songs。 I found the story to be intriguing, especially the beef he had with Jeezy 😥。 If you are a fan of hip h It’s safe to say that Gucci Mane lived, ‘One Hell of a Life’。 His autobiography tells the story of his rise to fame, starting from the trap house to rapping to his stints in and out of prison。 He also shows how he overcame addiction and changed his mentality for a better lifestyle。 Being a fan of his music, I didn’t know a lot of what was going on during the recording of his more popular songs。 I found the story to be intriguing, especially the beef he had with Jeezy 😥。 If you are a fan of hip hop especially music from the south, this is the book to check out for better insight。 。。。more

AUDIO- Anyone who loves music, especially hip hop, needs to read this。 Struck me that I’m not overly familiar with some of my favorite artist’s back stories。 Gucci’s story is one of intense preservation despite many societal factors that pushed against him。 I appreciated how he talked about his struggle with drugs and how they affected his mental state。 I just really like the book。 Made me like Gucci even more。

I bought this for my daughter for Xmas two years ago。 She never read it。 I read it -- but didn't finish。 I was hoping for more storytelling and relationships。 Since I'm not a very big fan of his music, I'm sure others will have enjoyed this book more than me。 I bought this for my daughter for Xmas two years ago。 She never read it。 I read it -- but didn't finish。 I was hoping for more storytelling and relationships。 Since I'm not a very big fan of his music, I'm sure others will have enjoyed this book more than me。 。。。more

I don’t know why I was so surprised I’d like this book。 I’m not a big fan of trap music and don’t listen to Gucci, but this story was fascinating。 Yes, it followed the “drink and drug hell” cliche of many celebrity memoirs, but it was still enlightening。 I especially loved reading how the trap music industry works which felt a lot like the early blues industry。 Highly recommend。

Gucci has one hell of a story。 The entire thing from start to finish was breakneck speed。 A little full of himself but I think he gets to be

WowI feel like I swallowed this book whole。 Gucci has such an interesting past and it was really cool to learn about his past while connecting the dots of his music。 A trip down memory lane of mixtapes that had me reminiscing of the early 2010s。 It was cool to see him articulate his moments of darkness juxtaposed with this relentless ambition that ultimately ended up saving him。 FreeGucci

A good hood story is needed every now again。 Other than his radio hits and beef with others I didn’t know much about Gucci Mane。 I enjoyed the ride of learning about his journey, his in-and-out incarcerations, and his realization that drugs were consuming all of him and that he needed a change。 He did a great job of capturing all of his life-altering moments and how they made him who he is today。

What a wild ride and he made me laugh out loud at times too。 Loved this!

I really enjoyed this audiobook。 It's the perfect book to listen to。 I admit I did not know anything about Gucci Mane but found his autobiography compelling and engaging。 It was interested to listen to his stories about his childhood and how he got into rapping。 While he doesn't get into the events of the crimes he was accused of, he explains his imprisonment with honesty。 I really enjoyed this audiobook。 It's the perfect book to listen to。 I admit I did not know anything about Gucci Mane but found his autobiography compelling and engaging。 It was interested to listen to his stories about his childhood and how he got into rapping。 While he doesn't get into the events of the crimes he was accused of, he explains his imprisonment with honesty。 。。。more

To start, I Never been a fan of Gucci's music and was given this book as a gift and I have to say I enjoyed the read and the story that followed。 His transition from the trap to rap is inspirational for street minded alike。 " Fall down seven, get up eight " comes to mind when I think of the central theme that runs through his story。I would recommend this to people that like rap music in general and enjoy a good comeback story。 Louis Salas To start, I Never been a fan of Gucci's music and was given this book as a gift and I have to say I enjoyed the read and the story that followed。 His transition from the trap to rap is inspirational for street minded alike。 " Fall down seven, get up eight " comes to mind when I think of the central theme that runs through his story。I would recommend this to people that like rap music in general and enjoy a good comeback story。 Louis Salas 。。。more

Prior to reading this book, I didn’t listen to trap music and was honestly confused why anyone would。Gucci Mane’s honesty, raw transparency, and understanding has changed that entirely。 I listened to the lyrics with a deeper understanding of their meaning and has opened a world I previously didn’t engage with。 I read this book as part of a Trap Music book club and I am definitely looking forward to reading more。

I had no idea who or what a “Gucci Mane” was before picking up this memoir。 If you are also old/uncool: He’s an Atlanta rapper known for facial tattoos, erratic behavior, stints in jail, and inspiring the “Bitch I might be” meme a few years back。Much as I relish a negative book review, negative reviews of memoirs can be cringe-inducing。 What should be a critique of a book too often becomes a critique of a life, of choices made or flaws revealed。 This kind of criticism confuses me。 Should the wri I had no idea who or what a “Gucci Mane” was before picking up this memoir。 If you are also old/uncool: He’s an Atlanta rapper known for facial tattoos, erratic behavior, stints in jail, and inspiring the “Bitch I might be” meme a few years back。Much as I relish a negative book review, negative reviews of memoirs can be cringe-inducing。 What should be a critique of a book too often becomes a critique of a life, of choices made or flaws revealed。 This kind of criticism confuses me。 Should the writer lie about their own lives (more than they, presumably, already do)? Or should only people with spotless records write memoirs?Despite the chaos, the narrative feels tightly controlled。 That’s likely thanks to his collaboration with music journalist Neil Martinez-Belkin (read the fascinating story of how their partnership came about; this was not a case of the publisher assigning a ghostwriter!) Gucci’s ability to produce massive amounts of music despite the constant court cases and jail stints and benders is compelling enough, but the book weaves in song lyrics, newspaper clippings, and court transcripts to even greater effectI got the sense that Gucci was writing right up to the present day and had to wrap things up quickly。 The “happy” ending feels a bit forced; comparing his old videos to his new ones makes it pretty darn clear that he’s healthier now (cue old fans saying they miss the “old Gucci”, or, my favourite YouTube comment, paraphrased: “he was better when he looked like Snorlax“), and his recent marriage is certainly Insta-perfect, but I wonder if the Trap God has put all those demons to rest。 I listened to his latest album, Mr。 Davis, and it’s good。 But some of it is bleak。 That’s kind of his thing。The cynical side of me says that this book, like many celebrity memoirs, is just a piece of personal branding。 It’s a way to stay relevant。 It doesn’t even matter if people read it, but if they do, they’ll read a carefully crafted story about how he came from nothing, lost almost everything, and gained it back again。 But this book got to me。 I believe he wrote it because he has to write, and what he wanted to say wouldn’t fit in a few verses。 He certainly wasn’t doing it to build sympathy。 His two most publicized stints in jail were related to pushing a woman out of a moving vehicle, and murder。 And I don’t think he was doing it to build up a tough persona。 An account of coming off opiates that rivaled the toilet scene in Trainspotting was pretty vulnerable and humbling。No matter why he wrote it, it hit the right spots for me as a memoir reader: an authentic voice, revealing a place and time and context beyond the author’s own life, written in a way that takes a few risks and strays from the safe PR formula。If you’re still not intrigued, try watching his very first music video, for So Icy (which, as you’ll learn, directly lead to that pesky murder charge) and one of his very latest, for Members Only, a song I find totally mesmerizing。 Same guy, twelve years and worlds apart。 Don’t you want to know how he got from point A to point B?The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is a great read for any fan of the legendary rapper, but it's hardly an autobiography。 The voice you're hearing in the book is not Gucci, but co-author, Neil Martinez-Belkin。 It has some great stories and clears up a lot of mystery, but ultimately is lacking a lot of detail and many of the events are left vague at best。 Whether this was due to legal reasons, or because Gucci wasn't as involved in the writing process as he could have been, (considering he was still locked up at the time) is not clear, but it definitely affected the end product。 。。。more

Gucci is more than a regular character in hip hop。 His escapades have gained him fans just as much as his music has。 This book was a good look into the circumstances that led him to where he is now。 The one thing that I think is most obvious in this is that the Co-writer definitely had a large hand in shaping how the story is relayed narratively。 It's never been more obvious to me that someone has taken another's words and helped to mold them because I know that Gucci, Radric Davis, doesn't form Gucci is more than a regular character in hip hop。 His escapades have gained him fans just as much as his music has。 This book was a good look into the circumstances that led him to where he is now。 The one thing that I think is most obvious in this is that the Co-writer definitely had a large hand in shaping how the story is relayed narratively。 It's never been more obvious to me that someone has taken another's words and helped to mold them because I know that Gucci, Radric Davis, doesn't form sentences and tell things in quite this form。 I spent a lot of time wondering how the stories were initially told and what questions were asked to make this book turn out this way because it fits the format of autobiography perfectly。 As for the content itself, Gucci was remarkably open with his actions and how he felt about them both good and bad and what were the faults at the time。 It's pretty refreshing to see him not necessarily revel in some of his deeds but to look back to call them what they were。 Overall it's just an interesting look at his life。 。。。more

What a character is Gucci! In this biography, he tells all the different aspects of his life, from prison to discover new artists like Migos, Young thug, etc。。。Personally, I preferred the autobiography by Rick Ross but this is personal taste。 I agree 100% with the conclusion of this book。 To sum up, this is a book an enjoyable book to read if you like Gucci。

I really liked this! How does his constant incarceration continue to fuel harmful tropes of Black hip hop artists as criminals? This book has similar subject matter to the podcast I’m listening to called “Louder than a riot” about the intersection of mass incarceration and hip hop music。 Both are super interesting and bringing up lots of questions 。。。more

Incredible story, I loved it。 Could have spent more time going into detail on some stories though; his life is so jam packed and eventful that he breezes through crazy life events and stories in a couple paragraphs that could have been a chapter or several pages。
